When Simple Work Starts Feeling Heavy
Let's talk about a moment every high performer hits and almost nobody understands.
You sit down to do something routine, something you've done a thousand times, a task that shouldn't take energy. And suddenly it feels heavier than it should.
Your mind drags. Your body tightens. You procrastinate for no logical reason. And part of you thinks, "What is wrong with me? This is easy. Why does this feel like a mountain today?"
Most people blame motivation, or sleep, or focus, or discipline. But it's rarely any of those.

Let me break that down in real terms. There are moments where your identity, the version of you you're growing into, moves ahead of your habits and your calendar. Your inner world upgrades, but your day-to-day responsibilities haven't caught up yet.
It's like your system is saying, "We don't live here anymore, so why are we doing work that belongs to an older season?"
I watched this happen with someone shifting from being a doer to being an actual leader. They were thinking bigger, making bigger decisions, carrying a different level of responsibility. But their calendar was still full of tasks built for the "old" them, the person who handled everything.
So every routine task felt heavier than necessary, not because the task was difficult, but because their identity didn't match it anymore.
Your body feels this mismatch first. Always. You feel it as drag, frustration, irritation, resistance, or this quiet voice saying, "Why am I still doing this?"
Here's where the real cost shows up. You burn energy you don't need to burn. Your effort-to-output ratio becomes distorted. You drain capacity that should go toward your current level, not old work.
And because the task is "simple," you think you're the issue. You're not. Your identity is simply ahead of your habits. This is a sign of growth, not failure.
So here's the move. When familiar work suddenly feels heavy, pause and ask, "Which identity is doing this, the old one or the current one?"
If the answer is "the old one," you have two options.
Option 1: Update the task. Delegate it, automate it, remove it, hand it off. Put it where it belongs, with the version of the business that exists now.
Option 2: Update the identity doing the task. Sometimes delegation isn't immediate, sometimes the structure isn't ready. That's fine. In that case, you consciously step into your current identity and say, "I'm doing this as the version of me who leads, not the version who had to do everything."
The task doesn't change, but the way your body carries it does. And the heaviness dissolves.
This is how high performers regain capacity without trying to "fix" motivation they didn't lose.
Identity first. Then everything works.
